Emily, 40 years old, physiotherapist

My change of life, from being a telecom marketing manager to being a physiotherapist.

What started it? Helping others has always been my thing. I enjoy listening to people and guiding them in their quest to overcome obstacles and accomplish new things. I used to be a telecom marketing manager; five years ago, I took part in a physiotherapy conference —and I found it so interesting that I went to meet the speaker. I asked her: “How did you get to where you are today?” She gave me her card, we met again, and she gave me advice and guidance. I began training, I worked nights and weekends, I took several internships, and I basically devoted all my free time (holidays included!) to my new goal.

What are you doing today? I’ve opened my own small physiotherapy practice, in the middle of the city. It’s simple but nice, I’ve enjoyed decorating it. My patients seem to like a lot it too … and I’m glad I’ve found a job that really fulfills me. I also enjoy being my own boss, and building strong relationships with my patients: Their victories are somehow a little bit mine. When a patient feels better after a few months of therapy and comes back to thank me for my help —it’s the most beautiful reward.

Any advice? Follow your dreams. It’s never too late to find the career you belong to. Of course, you have to hold on tight and stay the course. The training can be long and very often difficult, but if set your mind to it, there’s nothing you can’t do. A job you love will change your life.
